Spring is Here! ~ April 2026 Newsletter ~It gets ugly before it gets pretty. Here in New Hampshire, we're approaching the "ugly phase" of the season's transition. Beautiful carpets of snow melt into mud and a bleak landscape.  BUT, we take great pleasure in those signs of spring: more songbirds, warmer weather, longer days. Each tuft of green or flower emerging from the soggy earth is cause for celebration. Sometimes, to get to the good stuff, you have to look past the grime to the signs of
rebirth of the green season and better times and things to come.  Our focus: Nourish, revitalize, reconnect, appreciate, seed what we hope to enjoy and reep in the coming months. Â

Spring Plant SpotlightDandelion leaves are perfect for harvesting in spring! (You can harvest the roots, too, but they are best in the fall.) ID: Everyone recognizes dandelion, but it’s worth noting that not all weeds with the composite fluffy yellow flowers are dandelion. Dandelion only
has one flower on a stem, and no branching leaves. The stem is hollow and has a milky latex when cut. The leaves are serrated like the teeth of the lion (dent de lion). If your plant doesn’t fit this bill, it’s not a dandelion. (Hawkweeds are a common “look similar.”). Learn more about Dandelion and other spring plants in my Virtual Herb Walk.
Naturally Dyed EggsOne of the first signs that the days are getting longer is that chickens – who naturally take a winter laying hiatus – resume egg production. This farm and homestead reality makes a natural segue into our springtime ritual of
dyeing eggs. Regardless of your spiritual beliefs and traditions, dyeing eggs brings cheer to the dismal but warming early spring landscape with a promise of greener months to come. And it’s surprisingly easy to create beautifully dyed eggs with herbs and vegetables! It’s easier and more beautiful than you’d expect! ~ Learn more in my blog post. Â
